Highland Campervan and Motorhome Scheme

About the scheme

We welcome campervan and motorhome visitors to the Highlands to enjoy the region’s hospitality, scenery, local products, ecological experiences and more.

The Highland Campervan and Motorhome Scheme has been introduced to:

  • help ensure the Highlands remain a destination of choice for domestic and international visitors
  • support sustainable tourism across the region
  • enhance your journeys throughout the Highlands
  • invest in maintaining and improving existing infrastructure

Who the scheme is for

The scheme is open to anyone staying in a self-contained vehicle at one of the designated overnight car parks in the Highlands.

  • rental customers and vehicle owners are welcome
  • Highland residents touring in self-contained vehicles are encouraged to support the scheme
  • outdoor tables, chairs and awnings are not permitted at these sites

Why support the scheme

Self-contained vehicles used for overnight stays can have environmental and local impacts. Income from the scheme contributes directly to infrastructure development that benefits both visitors and communities.

Council Tax contributes around 20% of the Council’s overall budget for statutory and non-statutory services. Highland residents who tour in self-contained vehicles are encouraged to support the scheme as a way to contribute to sustainable tourism.

By joining the scheme, you help fund improvements that make your visits more comfortable and reduce the impact on local areas.

How the scheme compares to the Visitor Levy

This scheme is different from the proposed Visitor Levy. The Visitor Levy will only apply to fixed accommodation such as hotels and B&Bs. The Highland Campervan and Motorhome Scheme is voluntary and provides direct benefits to touring visitors.
