Children and young people with hearing impairment

Highland Deaf Education Service

The Highland Deaf Education Service works in partnership with parents and other professionals to ensure the needs of deaf and hearing-impaired children are met.

We primarily support pupils who are severely or profoundly deaf but also provide advice and assistance to those with mild or moderate hearing losses, including glue ear.

Our services include:

  • specialist teaching
  • advice and support for hearing-impaired pupils and their peers
  • advice and support for classroom teachers and other staff
  • deaf awareness training for teachers, support staff, and pupils
  • home visits for pre-school children
  • sign language tuition for families, hearing-impaired pupils, and peers
  • advice on room layout and specialist equipment
  • assessment of the acoustic environment
  • provision of radio aids and suitable listening devices
  • training in the use of specialist equipment
  • advice regarding specialist exam arrangements
  • support groups for parents of pre-school hearing-impaired children
  • referrals and links with other agencies

Most service requests come directly from audiology, with parent or carer consent. Requests can also be made by parents and schools.
