The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Service provides advice, consultation, training and, where appropriate, direct teaching to children and young people where English is not their first language.
EAL teachers work with staff in schools to make sure:
- everyone feels welcome and included
- children can keep using their home language
- all pupils can take part in lessons
- children get the right help they need
- teachers use good ways to support learning
- some pupils get extra help in small groups or one-to-one
- we understand each child’s full story, not just their schoolwork
- we respect different languages, religions, and cultures
- families and schools work well together
