Condensation, damp and mould: advice for tenants

How to prevent condensation and mould

You can reduce condensation by keeping your home warm, ventilated and dry.

Keep your home warm:

  • use low, steady heating rather than short bursts of heat
  • avoid letting rooms get very cold

Improve ventilation:

  • open windows slightly, especially in kitchens and bathrooms
  • use extractor fans and keep air vents clear
  • close kitchen and bathroom doors when in use to stop steam spreading
  • clean vents and fans regularly

Reduce moisture:

  • dry clothes outside if possible
  • if using a tumble dryer, make sure it vents outside or empty the water reservoir often
  • cover pans when cooking
  • open windows when bathing or showering
  • leave gaps between furniture and walls
  • keep windowsills clear so windows can open easily

Clean regularly:

  • vacuum to remove dust and mould spores
  • do not brush mouldy areas, as this spreads spores

Remove excess moisture:

  • wipe windows and sills with a dry cloth each morning
