Isle of Skye airfield

Lookout duties

Aircraft intending to land always have absolute priority over any other activity on the airfield. It is essential that all personnel follow the established lookout procedures to ensure safety.

Lookout responsibilities

The designated lookout must:

  • clear the runway immediately for any incoming aircraft
  • alert the event organiser when the lookout vehicle’s horn or whistle is sounded repeatedly
  • remain aware of all ongoing activities during events or planned operations
  • monitor for unauthorised activity, such as trespassing, which may occur during events
  • check for any scheduled aircraft movements during events by contacting the Portree office on 01478 612727
  • ensure the lookout vehicle has both main headlamps and amber beacons switched on at all times while on the runway and before any operations begin
  • inspect the runway for damage and remove any debris after each period of use
  • lock the aerodrome gates when leaving the site

Aircraft landing procedure

If a fixed-wing aircraft intends to land, it will typically fly over the runway and circle several times within visible range. Once you have acknowledged the aircraft:

  1. clear the runway immediately.
  2. move the lookout vehicle to the access road, well clear of the runway.

Emergency helicopters will usually land in the designated yellow zone, which must be kept clear at all times.

Aircraft take-off procedure

If an aircraft wishes to take off during operations:

  1. the pilot must request permission from the lookout.
  2. the lookout must:
    • ensure the runway is clear
    • confirm all other operations have ceased
    • check the runway is free of debris
  3. once safe, the lookout will inform the pilot that take-off is approved
