Tell Us Once: report a death to government services

What Tell Us Once does

When someone dies, you can use the Tell Us Once service to notify several government departments at the same time. This service is free and helps reduce the number of calls and forms you need to complete.

You will be offered this service when you register the death.

Tell Us Once can notify:

  • HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) – to deal with tax and cancel benefits
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) – to stop benefits like State Pension or Income Support
  • Passport Office – to cancel a British passport
  • DVLA – to cancel a driving licence and remove the person as the keeper of any vehicles
  • Highland Council – to update council tax, council housing, housing benefit, discounted travel, blue badge, and election services
