Burial grounds

We manage 247 burial grounds across the Highlands and operate Inverness Crematorium. Each year, we respectfully carry out over 1,700 burials and 1,300 cremations.

Cemetery burials

To arrange a burial, you must own the Exclusive Right of Burial in a burial ground. In Scotland, this is known as a lair (also called a burial plot).

Only the lair owner can permit a burial. If the owner has died, their legal successors can approve its use.

You can apply to purchase a lair or transfer ownership through formal registration.

Register a death

In Scotland, you must register a death within 8 days. You can do this at any registration office.
