Outdoor access

Local access guidance

You have the right to enjoy the outdoors in Scotland, but you must do so responsibly to protect wildlife and the environment.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code explains how to:

  • follow access rights responsibly
  • avoid disturbing wildlife
  • support nature conservation
  • understand your responsibilities as a land manager

Activities that need extra care

Some activities can disturb wildlife if not done carefully. These include:

  • taking photographs
  • using drones
  • walking dogs near livestock or nesting birds

When extra guidance applies

Sometimes, specific advice is needed to protect:

  • public health
  • sensitive habitats or species

This may include temporary signs, restrictions or diversions. Always follow local advice.
