Lairg Gaelic Medium Primary Education (GMPE) Assessment Response
Highland Council received a request for an assessment of the need for Gaelic Medium Education in Lairg. The request was received from the lead parent on 16 June 2026.
Through the Education (Scotland) Act 2016, the Scottish Government has established a process for parents to request an assessment of the need for Gaelic medium primary education (GMPE) from their education authority, the local authority that provides school education in the area where they live.

Next steps
The assessment has concluded that Gaelic Medium Primary Education (GMPE) provision should be recommended for establishment in Lairg Primary School. The recommendation will now be presented to the Education Committee for consideration and approval.
Confirmation of timescales for the introduction of GME are dependent on staffing recruitment and readiness of school accommodation. We will continue to welcome requests and monitor parental demand for GME in the interim for the commencement of GME in Lairg.
The outcome supports our commitment to Gaelic education and the continued development of Gaelic Medium Education across Highland.
