Domestic noise complaints

What is domestic noise?

Domestic noises are sounds originating from within a household or residential property, including noise from everyday living activities and potential disturbances like loud music, parties, or a barking dog.

Most homes are not completely soundproof. Everyone can expect some noise from neighbours.

What we can investigate

We have a legal duty to investigate noise that may be a statutory nuisance. This includes:

  • regular loud music or TV
  • musical instruments played frequently
  • DIY at unreasonable hours
  • dogs barking excessively
  • domestic wind turbines or air source heat pumps

If you are a tenant of a housing association, report noise issues to your Housing Officer.

For complaints about anti-social behaviour, view our Anti-social behaviour section.

What we cannot investigate

We cannot take action on noise caused by:

  • footsteps
  • normal use of household or garden appliances (for example, washing machines or lawn mowers)
  • poor sound insulation
  • children playing
  • loud voices or arguments
  • banging doors or cupboards
  • one-off incidents
  • DIY at reasonable hours
  • fireworks
  • vehicles on public roads
  • disorderly or threatening behaviour (contact Police Scotland)
