What is domestic noise?
Domestic noises are sounds originating from within a household or residential property, including noise from everyday living activities and potential disturbances like loud music, parties, or a barking dog.
Most homes are not completely soundproof. Everyone can expect some noise from neighbours.
What we can investigate
We have a legal duty to investigate noise that may be a statutory nuisance. This includes:
- regular loud music or TV
- musical instruments played frequently
- DIY at unreasonable hours
- dogs barking excessively
- domestic wind turbines or air source heat pumps
If you are a tenant of a housing association, report noise issues to your Housing Officer.

What we cannot investigate
We cannot take action on noise caused by:
- footsteps
- normal use of household or garden appliances (for example, washing machines or lawn mowers)
- poor sound insulation
- children playing
- loud voices or arguments
- banging doors or cupboards
- one-off incidents
- DIY at reasonable hours
- fireworks
- vehicles on public roads
- disorderly or threatening behaviour (contact Police Scotland)
