Neighbour notification for planning applications

What is neighbour notification?

Neighbour notification is a legal requirement for certain types of planning applications.

It ensures that people living or owning land near a proposed development are informed and given the opportunity to comment.

We carry out neighbour notification for:

  • planning permission
  • planning permission in principle
  • approval of matters specified in conditions

It does not apply to:

  • listed building consent
  • conservation area consent
  • advertisement consent

Who we notify

We notify anyone with an interest in “neighbouring land” of a planning application.

‘Neighbouring land’ means "An area or plot or land which, or part of which, has a common boundary, or within 20 metres of the boundary of the land for which the development is proposed.”

If there are no premises within this area, we publish a notice in a local newspaper. The applicant must pay a fee to cover the cost of the advert. We’ll let the applicant know if this applies.

We may also advertise applications for other statutory reasons.
