Storage and disposal of upholstered furniture

How to dispose of upholstered furniture

There are several ways to dispose of your furniture.

Reuse first

You can donate furniture to a charity or reuse shop, such as New Start Highland or The British Heart Foundation. Ensure the item is undamaged and has a fire safety label.

If you are buying second-hand furniture, check for a fire safety label and avoid items with rips or tears.

Takeback schemes

Some retailers offer takeback schemes when you purchase new furniture. Check their website or ask in-store for details.

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)

You can take upholstered furniture to a recycling centre. Follow these steps to ensure safe handling:

  • use the correct skip for upholstered seating
  • do not mix with general waste
  • ask staff if you are unsure
  • keep items whole if possible
  • if damaged, cover with sheeting and tape to prevent foam or fabric from escaping
