Enrol your child in a school outside your catchment area

How we make decisions

When deciding whether to grant a placing request, we prioritise children in the following order:

  1. Children living in the Highland Council area.
  2. Children with medical or support needs best met at the school.
  3. Children with siblings already attending the school.
  4. Children from a capped catchment school.
  5. Children attending an associated primary school (for S1 only).
  6. The proximity of the child's residence to the school.
  7. Road safety and ease of travel.

Reasons a placing request may be refused

We may refuse a placing request to ensure places are available for children moving into the catchment area or for the following reasons:

  • It would require hiring an additional teacher.
  • Major modifications to the school building or facilities would be necessary.
  • The request could disrupt the child's education.
  • It could negatively impact the discipline or well-being of other pupils.
  • An extra class or teacher would be needed in future years.
  • The school’s capacity would be exceeded, even if space is available in individual classes.
  • The education provided would not be suitable for the child's age, ability, or special needs.
  • The child has previously been removed from the school by the Council.
