The Highland Council Election: 3 May 2012

The Electoral Commission has now published the timetable for the Scottish Local Government Elections on 3 May 2012. The timetable can be found here.

The Crofting Commission Elections 2012

Alistair Dodds, Chief Executive of the Highland Council, has been appointed as Returning Officer for the Crofting Commission elections in 2012.

The Nomination process has now concluded. The Nominations receieved are available here.

How to become a Councillor

The Improvement Service and COSLA have teamed up to produce a guide for prospective candidates ahead of the May 2012 Scottish local government elections.

'A Candidate's Guide to Becoming a Councillor' is available to anyone interested in standing for election to become a councillor, regardless of their political persuasion or affiliation. The guide covers all aspects of the role, providing comprehensive guidance and practical advice on council/councillor duties, responsibilities and expectations. Current elected members also offer an insight into their own experiences.

By-election - Ward 20 (Inverness South)

Carolyn Caddick, Scottish Liberal Democrats, has been elected as a councillor for The Highland Council to serve ward 20 (Inverness South).

The turn out was 26.8% and the total number of valid votes cast was 2,607.

Sixth Review of UK Parliamentary Constituencies

The Boundary Commission for Scotland has announced publication plans for their Initial Proposals for constituencies as part of their Sixth Review of UK Parliament Constituencies.

The Commission has published Initial Proposals for a 12 week period of public consultation until Wednesday 4 January 2012. The Commission have also announced the dates and venues of the Public Hearings which form part of that public consultation.

The Hearing for Highland Constituencies was held held on 24 November 2011 in the Town House, Inverness before Sheriff Principal Sir Stephen Young.
