Keeping your home safe and secure

Security and access

As a Highland Council tenant, you are responsible for keeping your home safe, secure and in good condition.

This includes:

  • preventing damage
  • reporting issues
  • protecting your home when you are away

Keeping your home safe

You should:

  • know where your stopcock is in case you need to turn off the water
  • keep your home warm and well-ventilated to avoid damp and condensation
  • test your smoke alarms regularly
  • never use paraffin or bottled gas heaters – these are not allowed in council homes
  • let us know if you plan to be away for more than 4 weeks

Sheds and outbuildings

You are responsible for securing any sheds or outbuildings that belong to your home.

If you lose your keys, you must arrange and pay for a lock change.

Access to your home

We may need to enter your home to carry out inspections or repairs. We will always give you at least 24 hours’ notice unless it is an emergency.
