Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

Learning Agreements

A Learning Agreement is a formal document that explains the expectations and responsibilities of a student receiving an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). It is required for eligibility and ongoing payments.

You must have a current signed Learning Agreement in place before you apply for an EMA, and you must follow its conditions.

A new agreement is needed each academic year. Failure to comply may result in the loss of your allowance.

What is in a Learning Agreement?

It typically covers:

  • Attendance requirements: you must attend your learning centre (your school or training provider) regularly - at least 21 hours of guided learning per week
  • Behaviour and attitude: you are expected to behave responsibly and respectfully in your learning environment
  • Academic progress: you must make satisfactory progress in your studies or training
  • Commitment to the programme: you agree to fully participate in the agreed learning activities
