Check if your work needs a building warrant

Get advice before you apply for a building warrant

We offer two services to find out if you need a building warrant.

Development enquiry service

You can use our development enquiry service to find out whether your proposal requires a building warrant or planning permission. We will provide you with a written response.

Submit a development enquiry if you are:

  • changing a domestic property, such as building an extension, making alterations, or developing within your garden
  • changing the use, making internal or external alterations, or extending a business, industrial, or agricultural building
  • a utilities provider notifying us of works
  • a telecommunications provider wishing to notify us of permitted development rights or find out if planning permission is needed

Telecommunications providers offering Prior Notification should use the Prior Notification form.

Fees

A fee applies to the development enquiry service, as it is a value-added service. Fees are reviewed annually and updated each April.

You can find the current Development Enquiry fee on the Planning fees and charges page.
