Council Tax discounts and exemptions for people

Disabled people

You might be able to get money off your Council Tax bill if you, or someone you live with, has a long-term physical or mental condition that makes everyday life more difficult.

To qualify, your home must have at least one of the following:

  • a room that is not a kitchen or a bathroom, that is mainly used by the disabled person
  • an additional bathroom or kitchen that is needed to meet the needs of the disabled person
  • enough floor space for the disabled person to use their wheelchair indoors

We will ask you to provide evidence to support your application.  There are some examples of the type of evidence we look for listed below.

  • Evidence of any disability benefits that the disabled person may be in receipt of, for example, Child Disability Payment or Adult Disability Payment at standard or enhanced rate.
  • Evidence confirming when work was carried out on your property to make it suitable to meet the needs of the disabled person.
  • A letter from a health professional, (for example a GP, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist), which can be obtained at no cost.

Before any decision is made on a reduction, we may need to visit you.

This reduction is to help make sure people with disabilities are not charged more Council Tax just because they need extra space or facilities.
