Care leavers

If a home is exclusively occupied by one or more care leavers, it is exempt from Council Tax.

If a person is a care leaver, they are not included ('disregarded') as occupiers for the purposes of calculating Council Tax.

A care leaver is a person who:

  • Is over 18 years of age and under 26
  • Has been looked after by a Local authority any time from their sixteenth birthday onwards
  • Is no longer looked after by a local authority
