Getting married in Scotland

What happens next

Once the registrar has checked your forms and documents, they will prepare your marriage schedule. Your marriage cannot go ahead without it.

For religious or belief ceremonies

You must collect the schedule from the registrar no more than 7 days before the wedding, as long as minimum 29 days notice has been given.

Only one of you needs to collect the schedule. You must collect it in person, the registrar cannot give it to anyone else.

The Registrar will advise if you still need to provide original documents.

For civil ceremonies

The registrar will bring the schedule to the ceremony.

Sign and return the marriage schedule

The schedule must be signed in permanent black ink by:

  • both people getting married
  • the person conducting the ceremony
  • two witnesses

After the ceremony, the signed schedule must be returned to the registrar within 3 days so your marriage can be officially registered.
