Before starting work
If you are planning to carry out works on a public road, the following steps are required:
- read the guidance before applying for a permit to understand your responsibilities
- you must hire a qualified contractor with the appropriate certification to work on public roads
- you must submit your contractor’s third-party insurance documents
- provide a scanned copy of your contractor’s Street Works Licence card
Carrying out works without permission is an offence. We may remove unauthorised works and recover costs from the responsible party.
Charges
Payment will be required through our online application form:
- Minor works: £177 (including inspection fee)
- Installation of apparatus: £622 per opening
Standard conditions
The following conditions must be met:
- all works must follow Community Services’ standard specifications
- signage must comply with Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual
- the consent-holder is responsible for any claims arising from their works and for maintaining any reinstatement for a period of 6 years after completion
- consent is valid only for the approved period but may be extended at our discretion
- all reinstatements must meet the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Roads
