Safety at roadworks
All works must comply with:
- New Roads and Street Works Act 1991
- Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, Section 57
Key safety requirements
You must:
- use only approved, reflectorised signage in line with current regulations
- ensure signs are clearly visible, securely fixed, and well maintained
- remove signs when no longer needed to avoid confusion
- use portable traffic signals or Stop and Go boards for one-way operations
- notify us of all portable signal installations, especially near junctions
- backfill openings promptly to minimise disruption
- keep carriageways and footways clear of unnecessary obstructions
- provide safe pedestrian diversions where needed
- use barriers at least 1 metre high and ensure accessibility for visually impaired users
- all workers must wear high-visibility PPE
- ensure the health and safety of workers and the public at all times
