Adapting your home to your needs

Home adaptations and equipment

If you are finding it difficult to manage at home whether due to age, disability, or health issues, help is available.

What are home adaptations?

Home adaptations are changes you can make to your home to make it easier and safer for you to move around at home or carry out day to day tasks.

Help is available whether you own your home or rent it.

We can help with:

  • handrails or grab rails
  • outdoor ramps or widened doorways for better access
  • replacing a bath with a shower
  • adaptations to bathrooms, kitchens, or other rooms
  • technology like fall detectors, motion sensors, or flood alerts
  • equipment to support mobility, sight, hearing, or personal care needs
  • advice about moving home - if adapting your current home is not possible
  • support from an Occupational Therapist (OT), who can help assess your needs

Our goal is to help you live safely and comfortably in your own home for as long as possible.

How to get help

Contact your local Health and Social Care Team. They will work with you, an Occupational Therapist, Care and Repair Services, your landlord (if you are a tenant) and others to assess your needs and find the best solution.

Other housing options

If your home cannot be adapted or is not suitable for your long-term needs, your local Housing Options Team can advise you on your options.

You may find our "Stay or Go" housing options booklet helpful. It includes:

  • a checklist
  • tips on adapting or moving
  • information on where to get more advice
