Homeowners and private tenants
If you are a homeowner or private tenant needing to improve your home's accessibility due to a disability or health condition, help is available.
Get an assessment
An Occupational Therapist (OT) will contact you to assess your needs. To request an OT assessment, contact your local Health and Social Care Team:
There may be a wait to see an Occupational Therapist, with expected times advised after your request. After your assessment, the Care and Repair Service will discuss next steps and timelines directly with you.
Equipment and adaptations
If your home requires adaptations, the OT will refer you to Care and Repair Services, who can:
- help you find a contractor
- oversee the work
- support you with funding applications
Support available
Small adaptations
The Handyperson Service helps disabled people and residents aged over 65 with simple home modifications, such as installing grab rails or stair rails.
Larger adaptations
Care and Repair Services can help with:
- bathroom adaptations
- stairlifts and ramps
- widening doors or improving access
Support is available for those with disabilities or injuries in private or rented homes.
Funding
We may cover 80% or more of the cost for eligible work but the exact amount varies. Full funding could be available if you are on a low income.
Generally, works costing over £20,000 are not funded. If your needs are greater, we can help you explore alternative housing options.
