Council tenants
If you are a Highland Council tenant, some adaptations such as grab rails, handrails, or minor bathroom modifications can be made without a full Occupational Therapy assessment, if criteria are met.
Your local Health and Social Care Team can advise you and, if appropriate, refer your request to your Housing Office, which will arrange the work. Your Housing Officer can provide general advice about home adaptations.
Waiting times for assessments and work can vary; delays may occur due to equipment availability. Your team will inform you of expected wait times once your assessment starts.
Major adaptations
Major adaptations involving structural changes may take longer and are sometimes not feasible if your home does not meet long-term needs, is structurally unsuitable, or if costs are excessive.
In such cases, a Housing Options Officer can help you find suitable or adaptable alternative homes.
Heating changes for medical needs
If you need a different heating system for medical reasons, your Housing Office can assess your needs and decide if you meet the criteria.
