When do you need a completion certificate
When your building work is finished, you must apply for a completion certificate. This confirms that the work was done properly and follows the approved plans.
You cannot legally use or occupy the building until the certificate is accepted
You must apply for a completion certificate when:
- all work covered by your building warrant is finished
- you are ready for us to inspect the work
If you did work without a warrant
If you finished work without getting a building warrant, you must apply for a completion certificate where no warrant was obtained.
This costs more and may not be approved. We may:
- inspect the work
- ask for changes
- apply a penalty fee (up to 300% of the normal fee)
Request a copy of a completion certificate
If you previously obtained a completion certificate, but cannot find the original, you can request a copy from us for a fee.
Request copies of building warrant documents
We keep building warrant records for:
- up to 25 years for standard applications
- up to 50 years for large/complex buildings
