Garage sites and building your own garage
If you rent a garage site, you can build your own garage. You must follow our rules and get the right permissions.
What you can build
Your garage must:
- be made of wood weatherboarding with a felt pitched roof
- be 4.87m long × 2.74m wide × 2.44m high (with 300mm tolerance)
- have a floor laid on sleepers or concrete
- be a new building, unless we agree otherwise
The location of the garage must meet building standards. If these conditions cannot be met, you cannot build on the site.
If you want to build with brick, stone or other long-life materials, you must get our permission.
Maintenance
You must:
- keep the garage in good repair
- paint or treat it regularly with wood preservative
We do not carry out repairs on garages built on garage sites. Maintenance is your responsibility.
Permissions
Before you build, you must get:
- planning permission
- a building warrant
You must provide us with copies if requested.
