Play areas in the Highlands

Play Area Strategy

We want every child in Highland to have access to safe, inclusive and fun places to play. Our play park strategy sets out how we will improve play parks across the region over the next 10 years.

Why play parks matter

Play parks help children:

  • stay healthy and active
  • build friendships and social skills
  • learn through play
  • feel part of their community

During COVID-19, many children missed out on outdoor play. We want to make sure all children have regular access to good quality play parks.

By designing play parks with children, we can support important life skills such as problem solving, teamwork and resilience.

What we will do

Over the next 10 years we will:

  • make play parks safe and well maintained
  • design play parks to be inclusive for all ages and abilities
  • increase natural play and biodiversity
  • reduce waste by repairing and reusing equipment
  • work with communities to fundraise and improve local parks
  • involve children and young people in decisions about play parks
