Preventing and responding to bullying

Children's rights

Children and young people have a legal and moral right to protection from harm, fair treatment, and to have their voices heard. These rights are upheld in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which the UK has ratified.

In practice, this means that schools must:

  • listen to children and take their concerns seriously
  • respect their privacy and dignity
  • act in their best interests when making decisions
  • provide an education that promotes respect for others and human rights

These principles underpin all aspects of our approach to preventing and responding to bullying.
