Preventing and responding to bullying

Bullying prevention guidance

Preventing bullying is not just about reacting to incidents – it’s about creating a culture where bullying is less likely to happen in the first place. This means promoting positive relationships, teaching children about their rights, and involving them in shaping the school environment.

Many Highland schools use restorative or solution-focused approaches to resolve conflict and repair relationships. Others run peer mentoring schemes, buddy systems, or anti-bullying campaigns. These approaches help build a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Schools are encouraged to:

  • use circle time, peer mediation and mentoring to build empathy and communication
  • deliver lessons on emotional wellbeing, equality and diversity
  • involve pupils in decision-making through school councils and surveys
  • engage parents and carers through workshops, newsletters and events
