Your council tenancy

Sub-letting your home

You may be allowed to rent out your entire home to someone else for a period of time - for example if you are:

  • working abroad
  • serving a prison sentence

You will still be the legal tenant and remain responsible for the property. This means you will have a home to return to.

You can apply to sub-let if:

  • you have been the tenant for the past 12 months, or
  • if not, the home must have been your only or main home for the last 12 months and the tenant must have told us you were living there before that 12-month period began

We will not usually refuse permission unless there is a very good reason
