Your council tenancy

Adding someone to your tenancy

You can ask to add another person to your tenancy. This is called a joint tenancy.

A joint tenancy means two or more people sign the tenancy agreement together, share equal responsibility for the home and must follow all tenancy rules, including paying rent.

You can apply to add someone if:

  • both you and the person have lived in the property as your main home for at least 1 year
  • the person has been registered with us as part of your household for at least 1 year

We may refuse a joint tenancy if:

  • the listed conditions are not met
  • you have rent arrears, anti-social behaviour issues, or other tenancy problems
  • we are in the process of evicting you
  • adding someone would cause overcrowding
  • we plan to carry out major work on the property

These are just examples. If you are unsure, speak to your housing officer.
