Cold Call Control Zones

Before you start setting up a Cold Call Control Zone

There are a few things to think about before setting up a zone:

Is there demand in your area?
Doorstep crime is often under-reported. We can provide data on reported incidents, but it’s important to speak with local residents to understand concerns in your community.

What area will the zone cover?
Zones work best in areas with clear boundaries, such as:

  • a small housing estate
  • a group of streets with one main entrance

Who will manage the zone?
Zones can be set up by:

  • community councils
  • church groups
  • Neighbourhood Watch schemes
  • other active community organisations

Each zone should appoint a Cold Call Control Zone Champion. This person will:

  • be the main contact for Trading Standards
  • check that street signs are intact
  • welcome new residents and explain how the zone works

How will the zone be funded?
Zones need funding for:

  • street signs
  • door stickers

Funding can come from:

  • community councils
  • local fundraising
  • community grants

Have you consulted residents?
Once you have considered the points above, speak to residents in the proposed zone. Their support is essential for the zone to work effectively.
